Special Education Needs

The aims of the school are as follows:

• To give all pupils access to the National Curriculum and all other activities connected with the School so that they have a broad and balanced education.

• To provide a caring and supportive environment in which all pupils are valued equally and given opportunity to develop their full potential – emotionally, socially, physically and academically.

• Pupils with special needs are fully integrated socially and receive a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, differentiated to suit their needs.

• The school endeavours to meet the needs of all pupils, including scaffolding as well as challenge.

• The school fosters and maintains effective links with secondary schools to ensure identification and successful transfers of pupils with special educational needs.

• To ensure that parents are involved as partners in the education of their children.

In adopting these aims the staff at Settrington All Saints’ C of E Primary School accept that pupils with special educational needs are the shared responsibility of the whole staff. Advice is sought from the Special Education Advisory Service, and often this includes individual or small group tuition in school with a member of that team. The majority of children spend only a short time out of class with this specialist help, they also continue working alongside their peers on a regular timetable.

The school also has access the other North Yorkshire Services. There are a wide range of services available that school can refer to, or support parents/guardians to refer to directly.

Disability Access and Support

All children have access to the school environment and provision is made for those children with motor difficulties to move around school safely. A ramp is in place so that wheelchair users can reach the canteen and there are handrails on exterior and interior steps. There is also a disabled toilet.

As we are such a small school we would address individual need on a case by case basis but also seek to support in this way to ensure all disabled pupils are treated favourably. Previous examples have included providing additional equipment to make school life more comfortable and awareness talks in worship.
